FIFA Delays Suspension of U.S. World Cup Player

President Trump had requested a review of last week’s red card, saying it wasn’t a foul.

FIFA announced the delay of a one-game suspension of U.S. soccer player Folarin Balogun after President Donald Trump asked FIFA President Gianni Infantino to review the red card issued to the American player. The suspension would have caused the top scorer to miss Monday’s game against Belgium in Seattle.

“I asked for a review because I didn’t think it was a foul,” President Trump said. “I saw the play, and I’m a person who loves sports and was a good athlete. That wasn’t a foul, that wasn’t even an infraction.”

The disciplinary committee decided to delay the suspension “for a probationary period of one year.”

President Trump responded to the decision, stating, “Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice!”

FIFA has previously deferred suspensions for other players in high-profile games.
